World Wetlands Day 2021 Celebrated

2nd February 2021, Sukute, Sindhupalchok.

World Wetlands Day 2021 was celebrated at the Bank of Sunkoshi River in Sindhupalchowk. Nepal River Conservation Trust (NRCT) and Waterkeepers Nepal jointly organized a School level Essay Competition and River Rally among students of five schools of Chautara Sangachowkgadhi Municipality in collaboration with local schools. This year’s wetland day was a especial one as it was the 50th year of the signing of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat. This year world wetland day is celebrated with the main idea of “Inseparable Co-existence” among water, wetlands and life.

Essay writing competition involved participation of three students from each School of grade nine and ten on 1st of February. Students were asked to write on wetland day and this year’s theme for World Wetland Day: Water and Wetlands. The write-up from students was very innovative and competitive that judges found hard to decide the winners.

On 2nd February, Five students were awarded with different education materials for achieving first, second and third position in the essay competition. River Walkathon was also conducted along the 4 km stretch of Sunkoshi River with participation from school, locals and tourism entrepreneurs with over 100 participants. The main idea behind conducting this program was creating awareness among local community and the school students the importance of wetlands for wise-use of wetlands and their resources and encourages actions to restore them and stop their loss.
